About Our Family Photos

Imagine my surprise, when looking for photos to include on the Victory Vintage website, I discovered that my love for hats, clothing & accessories, was actually passed down from my great great-grandmother! I discovered that around the turn of the century, my great great-grandmother, Jeanette "Nettie" Glass owned a millinery (hat) shop in Winfield, Iowa. This discovery shows that my love for hats and all things Victorian is truly a part of my destiny!

We wanted to use family photos to start off our website with a "period" feel and also show you some of our heritage. The following gives you a brief description of the photos. We hope this stirs some interest in the Victorian & Old West periods through the vision of our heritage and also encourages you to dig into your own past to see what exciting secrets about your past, your present and your future await you!

Welcome to Nettie Glass' Millinery Shop in Winfield, Iowa around 1900. When researching my family photos for the website, I discovered that Nettie, my Great Great-Grandmother had owned and operated this millinery shop, making bold and outrageous hats. What a discovery and confirmation of my destiny to love, collect and sell hats & other Victorian wares! In addition to the photo, my Grandma Mary still has some of the netting used in some of Nettie's original millinery creations! What an exciting piece of my past! I believe that my love for hats would make Great Great-Grandma Nettie proud! Nettie (Jeanette) Glass was married to John Alvin ("Al") Glass. They had 2 daughters, Lucille & Helen. Lucille is the mother of Mary, who is my mother's mom. Grandma Mary still lives near Winfield, Iowa where she was married to my Grandpa Bill Wintermeyer in 1940 ~ they have enjoyed 65 years of marriage!

These fine ladies were customers of Nettie's Millinery Shop. These were all hats made by Nettie! This could very well be me & the ladies of Miss Kitty's Social Club! What an inspiration for meÖto have this kind of knowledge and proof of my ancestry! This also goes to show the importance of preserving family photos, even if you don't know all of the folks in them!

This is the Journey Family Photo. Benoni "Ben" (born in 1858 in Sterling, Indiana) on bottom left and Mary Cathrine Good (Born 10/21/1865) on bottom right were married on Jan. 14th, 1882 in Page County, Iowa. Their children are (front row l to r) Guy Wesley (9/23/1896 ~ 7/16/1930), Loris Fern (born 12/9/1902). (Back row l to r) Nettie Bell (born 11/21/1882), Blanche Ella (born 10/19/1890) and Grace Ethel (born 11/26/1885). Blanche is Rodger's Great Grandmother, making Ben & Mary his Great Great-Grandparents.

Here again are Benoni (Ben) & Mary Journey along with daughter Loris in their open-air car. I love Mary's wonderful hat. They look like quite the stylish family! Wouldn't we love to have some of their clothes & their car in our collection today!

Guy Journey sits atop his trusty steed! Guy was born in Frontier County, Nebraska on September 23, 1896 and died at the Naval Hospital in Mare Island, California on July 16, 1930. He looks like quite the wild & wooly cowboy! "Giddy Up Guy!" Guy is also seen in the family photo above.

This is the W.E. Davis family. W.E. Davis (7/31/1854 ~ 3/24/1945) of Lewis, Iowa was married to Ellen Smith (11/3/1859 ~ 3/11/1914). They are shown with their daughter, Lillie Mae Davis (born on 7/1/1879). Lillie married John Jaberg (born on 3/6/1882) on January 3, 1912. Lillie and John had one daughter, Ellowene. Ellowene is Rodger's Grandmother (mother to his mom Lylene). This makes Lillie & John Jaberg, Rodger's Great Grandparents.

The lady standing in this photo is Elizabeth Welsh Dundee, Rodger's Great Grandmother on his dad's side. She was born on August 27th, 1865 in Scotland. She came to America with her sister (seated), when she was 18 years old in 1883. She married John A Patton (Rodger's Great Grandfather) in Iowa (see his photo below). She died on April 3rd, 1928 in Red Oak, Iowa. What elegant young women! Imagine buttoning all of those buttons!

This is John A. Patton, Rodger's Great Grandfather on his Dad's side. He was born on August 10, 1858 in Villisca, Iowa. He was married to Elizabeth Dundee (see her photo above). His parents were William Patton (born 9/27/1830, died 12/7/1900) and Helen Patton (born 2/6/1826, died 6/7/1897). John died on March 27th, 1927 in Red Oak, Iowa. John represents our cowboy and pioneer heritage. Looks like an ornery fellow, don't you think?
